Botox For Cosmetic - One of the most popular uses of Botox has been for cosmetic reasons. Small amounts of a sterilized toxin called botulinum toxin A (Botox) is injected directly into the tissue of the skin. This injection causes a fast acting muscular relaxation that usually results in the disappearance or fading of wrinkles.  When Botox is injected, the botulinum toxin A (botulinum has seven toxins: A through G) attaches itself to nerve endings. During unimpeded muscle function, the neurotransmitter acetylcholine is released from these nerve endings, causing muscle contractions. Botox blocks the release of acetylcholine, causing the muscle to become relaxed.

 

The FDA has approved Botox use for smoothing glabellar lines (lines between the eyebrows) only. Botox injections elsewhere on the body for cosmetic-only reasons are called "off-label." While these off-label injections are not cleared by the FDA they are not banned either. This is because of the FDA's determination that Botox is safe to use in this small dose, injectable manner.

Wrinkles in the skin are caused by muscle contractions over long periods of time. Botox injections are related to the cessation of these muscle contractions and the smoothing of the skin. Injections are to be given directly to the offending areas. Results will vary, of course, but typically show improvements within a few days and last for up to 4 months.  Facial wrinkling and muscle contractions over a lifetime can be either masked or disappear entirely with Botox injections. The treatments are able to change a person's appearance significantly, which make them popular in cosmetic uses.  Since the injections take such a short amount of time and have very little side effects, they are very popular.  Consult a board certified plastic surgeon or other board certified doctor to see if Botox treatments for cosmetic reasons are right for you.

Due to their perceived safety and minimal side effects, the botox injections can be taken in a variety of non-medical and medical facilities. "Botox parties" are social gatherings where large groups of people who are interested in getting Botox injections gather to socialize and be given Botox injections (usually by a doctor). The gatherings are usually the result of a large quantity Botox purchase, and discounted prices.  Botox treatments can run anywhere from $300 - $500 per visit. Botox has also been in widespread use in gyms, spas, salons, and even clothing boutiques.

There have been instances of "fake" Botox being administered under non-medical conditions with serious side effects. Due to possible side effects or unexpected results it is recommended that you only receive Botox injections by a board-certified plastic surgeon and only in a medical setting.
